A New Platform for Molecular Researches in YSUStudents of the Faculty of Biology at Yerevan State University, will have a new platform for molecular researches. On June 17, Hayastan Fund opened a molecular genetics laboratory equipped with modern facilities. The new devices will allow the students to explore the structure of blood DNA, detect the mutations; as well as study the genetics of the plants.
The laboratory is named after a famous biologist Dr. Christophe Terzian, who passed away at the age of 56 after a deadly disease in 2016. The up-to-date lab was made possible by the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund, through donation of 26 million drams from the Terzian family of France.
Dr. Christophe Terzian’s mother, Jacqueline Terzian marked the opening of the laboratory by cutting the red ribbon. Terzian’s daughters Lucy and Luanne expressed their joy as their father’s efforts to advance science in Armenia will be continued by coming generations.
Ruben Harutyunyan, head of the Chair of Genetics and Cytology of YSU Faculty of Biology told the reporters: "When Dr. Christoph Terzian was visiting YSU in the 90’s, he was dreaming about having an advanced laboratory in the university and developed genetics in the whole country”.
Now we can say that the scientist’s dream almost came true. A genetic researcher Tamara Sargsyan came to the laboratory opening with a picture in her hands: that’s her and Dr. Christoph Terzian 10 years ago. “I’m sure that we would not have a specialized center of genetics in Armenia, if it weren’t for Terzian’s long-term support”.
Vardan Partamyan, Head of Projects and External Relations in Hayastan All Armenian Fund, told the reporters that the Fund responded immediately to Jacqueline Terzian’s wish to have a laboratory of genetics in YSU to be called after her son. Partamyan informed that 24 million drams were spent on purchasing of the newest equipment, with another 2 million drams used for renovation and furnishing of the laboratory.
