New Irrigation Water System in Baghanis VillageThe border village of Baghanis, Tavush region, has been called “baghanis”, the same as “bath” as a result of being the only village with the river in the region. Despite the name the village didn’t have irrigation water system till this July.
With support from the Devecyan, Ekserciyan and Simsiroglu families of Argentina, Hayastan All-Armenian Fund has rebuilt the 2.4-kilometer irrigation network of the border village of Baghanis, making it possible to cultivate between 20 and 25 additional hectares of land. The main occupations of the community, which comprises 262 households are vegetable farming, viticulture, and livestock breeding.
According to Mayor of the village, Narek Sahakyan, the necessity of irrigation water system has long been felt in the community, which lives under the Azerbaijani shelling. “Our villagers feel a very strong bond with their native land. People of Baghanis will never leave the village and the programs like this keep our bond even stronger”.
Argentinean-Armenian benefactor Kirkor Simsiroglu, who was the first one to open the water tap, says that Diaspora wants Armenians to feel safe in their native land. “We committed ourselves to support the development of Armenia and we are very happy to see the changes we bring to the village and to families of Baghanis”, says Simsiroglu.
